It was winter when I visited an orphanage, unaware that this simple visit would become one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.
There, I met so many lovely children. Their eyes held stories of loss, longing, and broken dreams. Some missed their fathers, while others longed for the warmth of home. Yet, despite their circumstances, they had built a little family among themselves, sharing their joys and comforting one another.
What touched me most was their gratitude to Allah, even in difficult times.
My father used to visit that orphanage, and his memory had brought me there. Spending time with those children gave me a deep sense of peace, and for a while, I forgot my own worries.
But as I prepared to leave, something caught my attention. It was the cold winter season, and some children were wearing worn-out shoes, while others had none at all.
I returned home, but I could not stop thinking about them. While we sat comfortably in our warm rooms, wearing sweaters, socks, and shoes, those children were facing the cold without even the simplest protection for their feet.
I knew I could not change everything in their lives, but I could do something to make their winter a little warmer.
A Small Gesture, A Beautiful Memory

Two days later, I returned to the orphanage and took the children shopping.
As we entered the shoe shop, their excitement was unforgettable. I told them, "Choose whichever shoes you like."
They looked around with wonder, tried on different pairs, and eagerly showed me their choices. One child would ask how his shoes looked, while another would change his choice after seeing a friend's pair. Their laughter, little disagreements, and excitement filled the shop with happiness.
Watching them choose their own shoes was a moment I will never forget. For them, it was more than shopping; it was the joy of choosing something they truly liked.
Once every child had found a pair, we sat together for dinner.
It was one of the most beautiful days of my life. I had gone there hoping to bring happiness to those children, but they gave me something far more precious: a reminder of what happiness truly means.
I realised that we do not always need great wealth or grand gestures to make a difference. Sometimes, a small act of kindness can bring a smile that stays in someone's heart for a long time.
That day also brought me closer to my father's memory. Through this simple act, I felt that I was carrying forward the spirit of kindness that had inspired his visits.
I went there to give the children a little happiness, but I returned home with a heart full of it.
A Message from Common Grounds Foundation Pakistan
At Common Grounds Foundation Pakistan (CGF Pakistan), we believe every child deserves dignity, care, and hope. Supporting vulnerable children is not only about meeting their basic needs; it is also about making them feel valued, remembered, and loved.
This experience reminded me that meaningful change often begins with noticing a need and choosing to act. Whether through education, essential supplies, or a simple gesture of compassion, every effort can help make someone's world a little brighter.
Because sometimes, our greatest achievement is not what we accomplish for ourselves, but the happiness we bring into someone else's life.
